Federation Acct: ranking of rich, poor states in Nigeria
While some
states in
Nigeria can rely on their internally generated revenue for survival, many states heavily depend on the monthly statutory allocation from the Federation Account and VAT disbursement for their existence.
In the last two years, some states have continued to retain their positions as highest recipients (richest) from the Federation Account while others, low recipients (poor), continue to be at the bottom of the ladder in the ranking.
As the Economic Confidential magazine continues to provide the monthly allocations from the Federation Account, VAT Disbursement and from the Excess Crude, the Allocations in June 2008 indicate that the highest recipients may not necessarily be the states with high per capita.
From a table provided by www.nigerianmuse. com to the Economic Confidential, the highest recipient which comes first in the ranking is Rivers State followed by Akwa Ibom 2nd, Delta 3rd, Bayelsa 4th, Lagos 5th, Kano 6th, Ondo 7th, Katsina 8th, Oyo 9th and Kaduna 10th in that order. But on their per capita, Katsina is ranked 32nd, Oyo 33th, Lagos 34th, Kaduna 35th, and Kano States rank 36th respectively.
The 10 lowest recipient are Taraba 27, Plateau 28, Yobe 29, Enugu 30, Zamfara 31, Kwara 32, Ekiti 33, Gombe 34, Nasarawa 35, and Ebonyi 36.
But some of them have positive ranking per capita. For instance Nasarawa state is ranked 6 on per capita, Taraba 7, Yobe 8, Kwara 9, Ebonyi 11, Ekiti 13 and Gombe 14.The factors for differential on the disbursements include derivation principles which favour oil producing states, Populations, School Enrolments, Hospital Beds, Road Networks, Landmass, Terrain and Internally Generated Revenue.

‘Credit institutions need govt support’

Programme Director, Self-Reliance Economic Advancement Programme (SEAP), Deacon Oladokun Olatunde, has decried the non-challant attitude of the Federal Government, through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to the growth of micro credit institutions in the country.
Speaking at the inauguration of newly elected branch executives of the Vine Branch of the organisation in Ibadan recently, Olatunde described credit institutions as veritable tools of poverty eradication, which unfortunately has been neglected by the government. The contributions of the credit insitutions, he said, would not be felt in the economy if the current trend persists. In view of this, the SEAP boss called on the CBN to extend the same gesture it is granting to the micro-finance banks to the micro credit instituitons to enhance their growth.
“ It is imperative for the government to give our work more support. The CBN has been highly supportive to the actitvities of the microfinance banks but not much has been done in terms of reckoning with the credit institutions. For instance, the banks have right to the micro finance fund of the Federal Government while we are not given such priviledges. Yet, the credit insitutions play significant part in poverty eradication throughout the country.
Many busnesses have been successsfully nurtured through the activities of the credit institutions. Not only that, we ensure the all round development of the micro entrepreneurs because we cater for their children, their psychology, their health and other areas which make a complete living”, he said.
Apart from the inauguration of new executives, the occasion witnessed the launch of the SEAP Health Foundation, which according to Oladokun, targets primarily at solving the health problems of children of members between the ages of 0 and 12 years, as well as pregnant members who might require any assistance of memebers. The Investment section of the organisation, led by Deaconess Sanya Oladokun, also presented eight motorcycles to beneficiaries and cash to another entrepreneur to purchase a car.
Commenting on the achievements of the organisation so far, Olatunde said that SEAP had been able to attract 50,000 membership and had partnered with several government and non governmental bodies to contribute towards poverty eradication in the society.
