IGI named as Ghana 2008 insurer

Niyi Alebiosu, Lagos - 17.01.2008

IN recognition of its growing status as an insurer of repute in Africa and a big supporter of sports on the continent, the Industrial and General Insurance Plc has been appointed the official insurer of the forthcoming 26th MTN Africa Cup of Nations tagged Ghana 2008.

The endorsement came at a contract signing ceremony attended by officials of IGI and Ghana 2008 Africa Cup of Nations Local Organising Committee (ACNLOC), held on Wednesday.

The contract, worth over USD600, 000 (N72milllion) made IGI the exclusive official insurance company for Ghana 2008. With this development, IGI will provide insurance coverage for all the participating teams’ officials and players as well as cover for all the stadia, training pitches and LOC offices to be used during the tournament.

The contract was signed on behalf of IGI by the Company’s Executive Vice Chairman Mr. Remi Olowude, (OON), while Ghana 2008 ACNLOC’s Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Rex Danquah signed on behalf of the LOC.

Speaking on the development, Deputy Managing Director, Operations, Mr. Rotimi Fashola who represented IGI at a media parley in Lagos said the appointment was a reflection of the company’s increasing role in the African insurance market.

“Our continental expansion is geared towards helping the African people and their economies to develop, and this is being recognised everywhere. We are going to ensure that Ghana 2008 is well covered and that the ACNLOC gets value for the money it is spending,” he said.
