Activities grounded at Ebonyi teaching hospital

Clement Oko Nnachi, Abakaliki - 15.04.2009

As the strike action embarked upon by the trio of resident doctors, nurses and health workers of Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, enters its seventh day, palpable fear has gripped residents as mortuary attendants/morticians, and the entire hospital staff and personnel have deserted the hospital.

Addressing medical and health workers of the teaching hospital on the update of the strike action, the Chairman of the health workers union, Comrade Nwafor Ikechukwu, said the indefinite strike would continue unless the government comply with the demands of the workers which include the payment of salaries based on the Consolidated Salary Structure, the reinstatement of sacked workers.

Ikechukwu, who attributed the crisis bedeviling the hospital to the alleged insensitivity of the board of management of the hospital, directed all mortuary attendants and undertakers, morticians and the security guards to desert the mortuary sections and hand over the keys to the Chairman, Medical and Advisory Council (CMAC).
