The Imo Tribunal Verdict
To say I was excited after news filtered in that the Imo Elections Petitions Tribunal had ruled in favour of Governor Ikedi Ohakim would be an understatement.
As an Imo State indigene who is based in Mbaise, I cannot but pray that the pace of visible developments being witnessed in the state since Ohakim took over last year be sustained.
Had the respectable judges succumbed to the intense blackmail of those I like to call political desperadoes by acting otherwise, Imo State would have been set back by a decade.
With all emphasis, I can personally testify that elections held in Imo on April 28, 2007 was relatively free and fair. The most popular candidate won. I think it behoves those who lost in that election to respect the wishes of the people of Imo, allow the governor to concentrate on the job he has been duly elected to perform and refrain from making inflamatory statements which only heat up the polity.
The fact that celebrations broke out spontaneously in the three senatorial districts of the state namely Orlu, Okigwe and Owerri is a testimony to the fact that what Ohakim holds today is a popular mandate. Who will not be happy anyway given the level-headedness, vision and courage that the governor has demonstrated in office unlike in the past when those who found themselves in office saw power as a weapon to oppress and intimidate the ordinary people in whom sovereignty is supposed to reside in the first place?
For instance, Owerri today is a lot better than what used to obtain up till May 29, 2007. The revolutionary “clean and green” initiative of the Ohakim administration has really cleaned up the city. If you drive through the major streets of Owerri today, you don’t see potholes again. These, among others, are signs that you now have a purposeful administration in place.
My able Governor Ohakim, please ride on. God is on your side as you conscientiously serve us the people of Imo.
