Kanu linked with Vogts’ job - Anichebe may leave Everton

PORTSMOUTH striker and Super Eagles captain, Nwankwo Kanu remains a candidate to take over the coaching reins of Nigeria.

A disappointing showing at the African Cup of Nations has increased pressure on Berti Vogts, the Nigeria manager, and Kanu is among the favourites to succeed him in the role, says The Times.

The Nigeria Football Association (NFA) is yet to take a decision on the German coach, who led the Eagles to their worst Nations Cup outing in over two decades, while reports have been linking some ex-internationals, including Stephen Keshi, Sunday Oliseh and Daniel Amokachi, with Vogts’ job.

Kanu signed a new contract last summer with the Barclays Premier League club that guarantees him an extension to cover next season if he plays 20 matches in all competitions this season.

Tribunesports recalls that Kanu played minor role for Eagles at Ghana 2008. He was injured in the 0-1 loss to the Elephants of Ivory Coast in an opening Group B match in Sekondi and the development ended his campaign at the Nations Cup.

At present he has made 18 appearances for Portsmouth but the signings of Jermain Defoe and Milan Baros on loan may restrict his appearances over the remainder of the campaign.

Meanwhile,Cardiff City is chasing Everton striker Victor Anichebe. City boss Dave Jones wants to take him on loan for the rest of the season. Anichebe was on target for Everton Wednesday night in the UEFA Cup victory over Brann.

But David Moyes could let him join the Bluebirds - despite his scoring exploits in Europe and the problems caused by AWOL top scorerYakubu Aiyegbeni.
