FG withdraws charges against Alamieyeseigha

The Code of Conduct Tribunal sitting in Abuja on Thursday struck out the case brought by the Federal Government against former governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, over alleged contravention of the code of conduct for public officers.

His victory was facilitated by the decision of the prosecution to withdraw the charges preferred against him on the matter. The Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr. Salihu Aliyu, representing the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, made an oral application for the withdrawal of the case.

Chief Alamieyeseigha was dragged before the tribunal for alleged abuse of his office as governor. When proceedings began at the tribunal, Aliyu reminded the tribunal that the AGF, Chief Mike Aondoakaa, promised he would make government’s position known today.

The AGF had told the tribunal that the case could only go on if Alamieyeseigha was not convicted of the same charge by a Federal High Court in Lagos in June this year.
