Awolowo discloses plans to improve FCT’s transportation

14.05.2008

Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, will soon be enjoying comfortable state-of-the-art bus services as the transport secretariat is mapping out strategies to make commuters pay less and experience easy and fast movement to their various destinations.

Mr. Olusegun Awolowo, who broke this news in Abuja on Tuesday in his office, said with the way and manner Abuja was growing, “there is the need for a master plan that would ensure that our buses are increased, special lanes created and our drivers properly trained to meet new challenges.”

Mr. Awolowo said there was the need to have new bus lanes to take care of commuters especially during the rush hours, adding that those in the suburbs relied entirely on these buses but quickly added that the number available had to be increased to meet the demand.

“It is a matter of demand and supply. As we have it now, our supply is short of demand. This explains why we still have rickety buses plying our roads. Once we have new and more modern buses, well trained drivers, more and more people would abandon their private cars and opt for our buses,” he said.
