7 govs in secret meeting in Abuja

Ayodele Adesanmi, Abuja - 14.02.2008

AHEAD of the March 8 national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), some governors of the party reportedly met on Tuesday night in Abuja to strategise.

The meeting, which was said to have been attended by seven governors and ran into the early hours of Wednesday, discussed issues related to who to support for the national chairmanship, funding, convention venue and election tribunal.

The governors in attendance reportedly included governors of Bayelsa, Mr Timipre Sylva; Kaduna, Alhaji Namadi Sambo; Akwa Ibom, Mr. Godswill Akpabio; Edo, Senator Osarhiemen Osunbor; Plateau, Mr Jonah Jang; and Benue, Mr. Gabriel Suswan, who was represented by the deputy.

A source who pleaded anonymity at the meeting told the Nigerian Tribune that the meeting was preparatory to a larger meeting of governors elected on the party’s platform.

The governors who met at a private residence of one of them at Asokoro, were said to have narrowed their choice of chairmanship to former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim, former Governor of Ebonyi, Dr. Sam Egwu and a new entrant, Dr. Nnamdi Ozobia.
