Don charges Remo indigenes on state creation

SONS and daughters of Remoland in Ogun State have been charged to work in unity in order to achieve their quest for Remo state.

Dr. B. A. Odunlami of the Department of History and Diplomatic Studies, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, who gave the charge at the 20th anniversary of the transition of Oba Moses Sowemimo Awolesi, the Akarigbo of Remoland (1952-1988), noted that Remo people constituted about one-sixth of Ogun State population.

Odunlami, who presented a paper on “Remo and the Quest for National Relevance” and the biography of the late monarch entitled: “The Life and Times of Oba Moses Sowemimo Awolesi (1892-1988),” said Remo people migrated from Iremo in Ile-Ife.

He, however, noted that some of them found in Ikenne and Iperu were said to have come from Ijebu-Ode, going by their cognomen, adding that history stated that they also came from Ile-Ife before they settled in Ijebu-Ode.

The lecturer said the title of Yeye Oba of Ile-Ife had always been held by Remo daughters, as is the case with the current holder, Chief (Mrs.) H.I.D Awolowo, claiming that this buttressed the fact that Remo people were from Ile-Ife.
