Yar’Adua assures Lagos on FG property

Okey Muogbo, Abuja - 12.02.2008

President Umaru Yar’Adua has assured the poeple of Lagos that rule of law would be applied in resolving all current disagreements between the Federal Government and the Lagos State government over the ownership of land and landed properties in the state.

The president gave the assurance on Monday in Abuja when he received the Council of Lagos State Eminent Citizens led by the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu.

Responding to a memorandum presented to him at the Presidential Villa by the Eminent Citizens, Yar’Adua promised that his administration would speed up the process of dialogue already initiated on the resolution of the disputes.

“We will resolve the issues in contention with Lagos State in conformity with the law. All the issues that have been raised are governed by some legislation. We will examine these laws and agree on the way forward. Where we cannot reach a consensus, then we should not be afraid to settle the matter in court.

“What I can assure you is that on any of these issues, whatever the court rules, we will obey,” President Yar’Adua said.
