Fashola appeals to eminent Lagos citizens

Lagos State governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, has appealed to eminent citizens of the state to use their moral authority to tackle street trading, begging, illegal sand digging, driving against the traffic and other social vices.

Governor Fashola made the appeal when he received members of the Eminent Citizens of Lagos, led by the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, who gave a report of what transpired during the last meeting of the team with President Umaru Yar’Adua in Abuja.

The governor said as respected opinion leaders, members of the team should assist the government in effecting changes in the ways of life of the members of their communities.

He thanked the members of the group for successfully engaging the President in committing himself to a peaceful resolution of the dispute over the landed properties of Lagos, adding that already, he had had fruitful discussions with the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Michael Aondoakaa, on the issues.

According to him, the President had also promised to convene a meeting with the state government immediately the committee set up by both the federal and state governments on the disputed properties turned in their reports.

Speaking on what transpired at Abuja, elder statesman and former Commissioner for Works and Housing, Alhaji Femi Okunnu, said President Yar’Adua assured the team that he would accelerate the settlement process and allow the rule of law to prevail.
