Daniel promises assistance for market fire victims

11.03.2008

Ogun State governor, Chief Gbenga Daniel, has sympathised with the traders whose wares were destroyed by the inferno which occurred at Kuto market in Abeokuta, saying that his government would cushion the effects of the losses.

A midnight fire had razed some parts of the market with about 40 shops with vegetables, food stuffs, palm oil and frozen foods destroyed, but no life was lost.

Governor Daniel, according to a release by his Press Officer, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, visited the market a few hours after the incident and was accompanied by the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Honourable Titilayo Oseni; the chairman of Abeokuta South Local Government Area, Prince Yanju Lipede; his counterpart from Abeokuta North, Mr. Abeeb Ajayi; the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbaebo, and other top government functionaries.

He said everything possible would be done to rebuild the market in line with the re-development programme of his government.

According to him, “we thank God that no life was lost. I sympathise with the victims on the loss of wares and we are going to rebuild the market and pay necessary compensation to cushion the effects of the loss.”

The governor, however, cautioned on the need to guard against such occurrence in future.
