NFL working on league calendar - Yakmut

By Tosin Omojola - 09.07.2008

Nigeria Football League(NFL) said it was already working towards ensuring that the 2008/09 league calendar is properly arranged to avoid unnecessary extention.

Executive secretary of the league board, Alhassan Yakmut, who disclosed this, informed that the step was necessary to ensure that the league season in the country tallied with those of Europe.
He explained that in planning the league in the new season, teams participating in continental competitions would be given much considerations, just as other football activities for the year would also be considered.

Taking a look at the just-concluding season which ended in May,Yakmut said the season lasted so long because of the initial problem that ensued between the NFL and the Nigeria Football Association (NFA), which he said truncated the programme of the league board.

In spite of that, the NFL scribe insisted that the board still did well with the organisation of the league, saying that for the league to have ended in May despite the initial hiccups means that with no crisis, the board will do better.

"I am very happy that the league ended successfully in spite of the problem that happened at the begining of the season. We were able to bounce back and get on track which means that there are rooms for iimprovement for the NFL," he stated.

Yakmut also spoke on the standard of the league in the just-concluded season, stressing that, " it was highly commendable that even till the last day of the season, no team was able to lay claim to the league trophy, it’s been long that we had such scenario in the Nigerian league."
