CIIN revives Calabar chapter

Two years after the
death of Chief
Eschor, the chapter’s chairman, the Calabar chapter of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN) inaugurated a nine-man executive committee to coordinate that region.
CIIN President, Mr Adeyemo Adejumo, who led the CIIN team to Calabar for the investiture of the new chairman, Mr John Urom, was accompanied by the Director-General of the institute, Mr Adegboyega Adepegba, and Mr Joseph Obah, Assistant Director, Corporate Affairs of the CIIN.
Adejumo, while speaking at the investiture, commended the concerted efforts of the insurance practitioners which culminated in the resuscitation of the institute’s Calabar branch, thereby rekindling the desire of members to be fully integrated into the branch network of Nigeria’s oldest professional body.
The investiture ceremony, according to the president, provided a veritable ground for reinventing the branch machinery of the CIIN Calabar branch, as well as ensuring that leadership opportunities present themselves to willing and able members of the insurance profession who are poised to channel their energy in the right direction.
He assured the branch executives that the governing council would leave no stones unturned in providing necessary encouragement for the branch and ensuring that it regains its steam force. “It is therefore my firm belief that the institute’s Calabar branch will join other branches of the Eastern Zone in creating the requisite synergies for promoting insurance education. The Eastern Zone comprises Port Harcourt, Enugu, Owerri, Onitsha, Aba and Calabar all of which present a formidable synergy in the quest to promote our profession and business in this part of the country.”
He recalled, “Permit me to pay tribute to the late Chief Eschor, who for many years served as chairman of the old Calabar branch and conducted the institute’s professional examinations at its early stages. He was committed and resolute in his leadership and the promotion of insurance education.

Lagos Finance Ministry inaugurates insurance underwriters, brokers

sioned 29 insurance underwriters and 101 brokers in the state in other to harness its insurance claims and policies.
The Commissioner for Finance, Prince Rotimi Habideen Oyekan, disclosed this at an inaugural meeting with insurance consortium at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa, Ikeja.
Prince Oyekan said that the state government was aware of the numerous risks to which its assets and workforce were exposed to, and therefore had decided to establish an Insurance Directorate with the sole aim of harnessing the various benefits from its insurance policies.
The commissioned underwriters and brokers are to enlighten the various departments, ministries and units of the state government on their insurance needs.
The commissioner further said that, insurance brokers were expected to assist the various government agencies to which they were posted, to complete necessary documentation and facilitate the payment of claims when required.
He therefore advised the insurance consortium to reciprocate the kind gesture of the state government by living up to expectations with regards to prompt payments of claims and most importantly, to remit their company’s tax deductions regularly.
Also speaking at the occasion was the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Mrs. Oluwaseyi Williams, who advised the brokers and underwriters to establish contacts with each ministry to enable them reach out to the ministries when necessary.
