Okiro, others mourn Iwendi

07.05.2008

The Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mike Okiro, on Tuesday in Abuja described the death of Mr. Haz Iwendi as a great loss to the nation. Iwendi was the Commissioner of Police in Kaduna State.

Okiro said this when the deputy governor of Kaduna State, Mr. Patrick Yakowa, paid him a condolence visit. “He proved to be a dedicated, hardworking and committed officer.

“God had destined him to die at this time when he was putting in his best. There was no way it could be changed,’’ Okiro said. Mr. Yakowa described Iwendi as the initiator of the state’s crime fighting outfit “Operation Yaki” which was inaugurated by Vice President Goodluck Jonathan in April.

Also reacting, former Inspector General of Police, Mr. Tafa Balogun, described the death of Iwendi as a sad loss to the Nigeria Police and the nation.

In a telephone interview with the Nigerian Tribune, he said Iwendi was the best image maker the Nigeria Police ever had, describing him as a hardworking and effective officer.
