IT was celebrations galore on Thursday at the Southern senatorial district of Ondo State as Governor Olusegun Agagu laid the foundation stone of the Ondo State University of Science and Technology.
Agagu told the gathering that the choice of a science and technology university, which, apart from meeting the long time aspiration of the people of the district for a tertiary institution, was hinged on the fact that the entire world was now driven by science and technology.
With the new institution, the governor said “our goal which can only be achieved with the support of all, is to establish a first class university whose product would compete favourably with their peers all over the world.”
As part of the govern-ment’s commitment to the smooth take-off of the institution and resumption of academic work next session, all compensations to affected community members have been fully paid just as contractors had been mobilised to site.
The state government has earmarked N2 billion for the instituion in the 2008 budget.
Agagu, who praised the establishment and implementation committees of the institution for a job well done, charged the six local government areas in the district, the state oil producing areas development commission and private establishments operating in the area to partner with the government to develop the new university into a world class institution.
