SWAN urges support for local clubs

THE Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, (SWAN), Lagos chapter, has called on Nigerians to show greater support for domestic clubs as a condition for the growth and development of football in the country.

Secretary of the association, Fred Edoreh, revealed that the executive council, after a study of the pattern of football supportership and fans behaviour as well as corporate patronage and sponsorship for Nigerian clubs and local competitions in recent times, resolved that stakeholders should be called upon to show greater commitment towards energising the league and local clubs for the future of the game in Nigeria.

To bring this about, the association is organising a seminar on domestic football with the theme "Actualising the potentials of the Nigerian League."

The two-day event billed tentatively to hold later in the month has been designed as a workshop to generate ideas for effective club management, financing, merchandising and public interest as well as market for club sponsorship and partnership sourcing through the exposition of the commercial, business, investment and marketing communications potentials of the local clubs and the league.

Chairman of the seminar organising committee, Emma Jemegah, told the press that the move by Lagos SWAN became imperative to safeguard the future of domestic fooball and ensure that the game fulfill its socio-economic potentials aside from publc entertainment.
