Woman dies, 5 injured in auto crash

By Adebayo Waheed - 06.02.2009

A 30-year-old woman died on Tuesday while five others sustain injuries in an auto crash which involved a 10-seater Toyota Hiace commercial bus with registration number Taraba XA 338 JAC and a trailer with registration number Taraba XA 479 TAR at Ojoo, along Ibadan-Oyo road.

The accident, according to an eyewitness, occured when the trailer, which was loaded with petroleum product from Lagos, had brake failure before ramming into the commercial bus coming from Mokola end of the Ojoo junction.

Nigerian Tribune learnt that efforts by the driver of the trailer to avert the accident proved abortive as the tanker fell on the vehicle, resulting in the death of the woman.

The accident would have led to another fire disaster but for the arrival of men of the Oyo State Fire Service, the Nigerian Civil Defence and Security Corps and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), who controlled the situation.

As a result, human and vehicular movements were disrupted as alternative routes were provided to avoid explosion of the petrol tanker.

When the Nigerian Tribune visited the scene of the incident, the area was cordoned off by security personnel.

The wounded passengers were said to have been rushed to a private hospital in the area while the remains of the deceased had been deposited at the Adeoyo General Hospital mortuary.

At the hospital, a medical personnel confirmed the death of the woman while the wounded passengers, mostly women, were seen receiving medical attention.
