EFCC storms councils in Delta

Officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have stormed Delta State to scrutinise account books of the local government areas in the state.

Nigerian Tribune authoritatively gathered that the officials had visited 15 out of the 25 local government councils in the state.

During the visit, documents relating to contracts executed and payments were verified.

The source disclosed that some council chairmen, whose records were in doubt, had been invited to the zonal office of the anti-graft agency in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, while others were commended for the execution of projects and proper book keeping.

The visit, according to sources, might have been informed by the avalanche of petitions from several quarters to the anti-graft agency against officials of councils in the state.

Chairman of Aniocha South Local Government Area and treasurer of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Mr. Emmanuel Sorokwu, confirmed on Thursday that EFCC officials were in his office on Wednesday to look into records as a way of ensuring accountability.

He said the exercise had become a routine since the zonal offices of the agency were opened recently.
