6-3-3-4 education system still in force - NERDC

The Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) has said that the 6-3-3-4 system of education is still in force and that the new Basic Education Curriculum (BEC), which will come to effect in September, will not “distort “ the system.

Executive Secretary of NERDC, Professor Godswill Obioma, who made this known in Minna, Niger State, on Monday, while addressing a press conference, said the introduction of the BEC was to facilitate the 6-3-3-4 system of education.

Professor Obioma said that “it should be noted that the introduction of the nine-year BEC does not and should not distort the 6-3-3-4 system of education. Contrary to speculation, there is nothing like 9-3-3-4 system neither do we have 1-2- 3 -9 system. “

He explained that the nine-year BEC had the primary school curriculum and the junior secondary school curriculum as separate entities, an innovation he said was designed to make learning at both levels of education “thematically connected and systematically taught from primary one to the junior secondary school.”
