Osun beats Oyo XI in Police Games opening

OSUN State Police Command football team on Wednesday defeated its Oyo State opponent by a lone goal in a game to mark the opening ceremonies of the third bi-ennial Zone X1 Police Games at the Eleyele Sports ground.

A nine-man Osun team survived the onslaught of the Oyo Command which fought gallantly for the equaliser of a thrilling match watched by Brig. Gen. Alphonsus Chukwu, who represesnted the Acting General Officer Commanding, GOC,2 Mechanised Division of the Nigerian Army.

A jubilant ASP Abimbola Oyewole, a member of the Organising Committee and of the Osun State Command attributed the victory to the level of stiff challenges his lads had faced in preparation for the games.

In his speech, Osun State Commisioner of Police, CP John Moronike, said the police were determined to train more champions for the country through regular competitions.

''We have produced great stars like Sunny Oyarekhua who played football for the old Green Eagles of Nigeria and Chioma Ajunwa who won the first gold medal for the country at the Olympics," he recalled.

Moronike advised the participants to abide by the rules of the game amd shunned any sort of short cut to excellence.
