FG sets up committee on Niger Delta

THE Federal Government has set up a 40-member committee headed by former Finance Minister, Dr. Kalu Idika Kalu to tackle the crisis in the Niger Delta region. The committee was saddled with the responsibility of working out practical solutions to the lingering conflict in the region.
A statement on the constitution of the committee signed by Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President, Mr. Ima Niboro, said the appointment had been approved by President Umaru Yar’Adua.

The members of the committee are Chief E. C. Adiele, Chief Tony Esu, Honourable Nduese Essien, Mrs. Grace Ekong, Professor Peter King, Chief Anderson Eseimokumo, Professor Lawrence Ekpebu, Professor Austin Ikein, Youpele Banigo, Chief Anthony Ani, Ukandi Gabriel Ogar, Colonel Edor Obi (rtd.), Mr. Nkoyo Toyo, Professor Omofume Onoge, Professor B. I. C. Ijeoma, Chief Isaac Jemide, Dr. Abel Dafioghor, Mr. Benard Jamaho, Mr. Sam Amuka Pemu, Senator Stella Omu and Ben Bouegha.

Others are Professor Julius Ihonvbere, Admiral Peter Ebhalemen, Mr. Charles Edosomhan (SAN), Professor E. M. Umezurike, Dr. Godswill Ihetu, Mr. Cyril Anyanwu, Dr. Sam Amadi, Mr. D. I. Kekemeke, Chief Olusola Oke, Colonel Wole Ohunayo (rtd.), Mr. Tonye Princewill, Mr. Magnus Abe, Chibuzor Ugowoha, Mr. Ledum Mitee, Mr. Tony Uranta, Anyakwe Nsirimovu, Chief Timi Alaibe and Atei Beredugo.

The committee is to review all previous reports on the Niger Delta with the aim of making appropriate recommendations on the way forward for the crisis-ridden region.

The committee will be inaugurated on Monday by Vice President Goodluck Jonathan at the State House, Abuja.
