Redeemer’s varisty installs Nigeria’s second MAGDAS

Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Lagos - 05.09.2008

The Redeemer’s University has become the second university in the country to install the Magnetic Data Acquisition System (MAGDAS). The inauguration of the equipment took place on Thursday at the university campus, Lagos.

In a speech at the occasion, the acting Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Lawrence Kola-wole, said MAGDAS was a project of Space Environment Research Centre (SERC). According to him, the project had wide application in space weather monitoring as well as ionospheric studies.

He further said that the equipment provided real time monitoring of the earth magnetic field. Prof. Kolawole said MAGDAS was Japan’s contribution to the ongoing International Heliospheric Year (IHY) programme of heliophysics through cross-disciplinary studies of universal processes and to demonstrate the beauty, relevance and significance of space and earth science to the world.

The acting vice chancellor named other countries in Africa that were benefiting from the IHY programme of MAGDAS to include Egypt and Ethiopia.
