ICPC nabs fake investigator in Ibadan

Idowu Samuel, Abuja - 05.07.2009

The Independent Corrupt Preactices and other related Offences Commission (ICPC) has nabbed a man whom it said has been duping innocent Nigerians parading himself as an investigator of the anti-graft agency.

The man in question Mr. Adeoti Yomi, is said to have perfected the act of impersonating ICPC investigators by moving from cities to cities and local government to local goverrnments in the south west extorting money from unsuspecting victims under the guise of working for the commission.

According to a statement by the anti-graft commission, Adeoti had been on the self designed racket for months and had duped a number of persons, including local government chairmen, until he ran out of luck as he attempted to swindle Mr. Adebisi Kukoyi, the Federal Comptroller of Works in Ogun State.

The suspect, according to the ICPC statement, had demanded the sum of N15m bribe from Kukoyi to cover up a pending investigation against his victim (Kukoyi) based on an alleged petition written against him.

The suspect, according to ICPC, had two accomplices with whom he approached Kukoyi as ICPC investigators sent to probe the allegation reportedly levelled against him by staffers in his office through a petition.

Trouble, according to ICPC, started when Kukoyi demanded for a proof of their mission, which the fake investigators could not produce thus prompting the victim to play along by giving them appointment to pay the amount of money demanded.

Unkonwn to the con men, Kukoyi got in touch with the ICPC which immediately launched an operation for his arrest.

On the appointed date, the suspects showed up at Kukoyi’s office, leaving two accomplices outside in a vehicle that brought them.

The unsuspecting fake ICPC investigator then demanded and got the N15 million bribe which had been marked by the operatives who, no sooner swooped on him and arrested him while his accomplices bolted immediately.
