Manufacturers still engage in unwholesome practices — NAFDAC

05.03.2008

Despite the efforts to ensure that regulated products were properly produced and conform with good manufacturing paractices before they were offered for public consumption, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised the alarm that some Nigerians have refused to change.

The Unit Head of NAFDAC, Kwara State, Mrs. Phebean Odu, disclosed this while briefing newsmen in her office in Ilorin after a routine sanction, surveillance and enforcement activities across the state.

She said her officers had uncovered an illegal factory where unapproved packaged water with fake NAFDAC registration number was being produced at Igbeti, a border town in Oyo State, but with a false claim of the product being manufactured at the GRA in Ilorin metropolis.

Mrs. Odu explained that following the presence of the fake product in Ilorin and other nearby towns, they went into mop-up operation and traced the production site of the fake water to Igbeti.

She said the factory, which has since been sealed off and owner arrested, is situated on about one and half plot of land along the Ogbomosho-Igbeti road.

She said NAFDAC, as a national agency was one family and collaborated with its sister offices in the states of the federation and, therefore, warned that there was no hiding place for the fakers.
