Obafemi on duty for Newcastle
NIGERIA has nothing to lose by allowing Newcastle striker, Obafemi Martins to join the Super Eagles on January 12 for their training camp in Malaga, Spain, says Chief Taiwo Ogunjobi, chairman, Technical Committee of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA).
Super Eagles camp opened on Friday for the 2008 African Nations Cup (ANC), but the NFA had agreed with some clubs of Nigerian players in England to delay the players arrival in order to fulfil crucial club commitment.
On Obafemi, who will join the Eagles a week to kick off of the ANC, Ogunjobi explained that the NFA was only showing understanding with Newcastle.
“The team is in precarious situation and needs Obafemi for some crucial games. We are only being compass-ionate. It is no big deal if Obafemi can delay his arrival in the interest of his club. We can only hope he does not get injured,” Ogunjobi told Tribunesports.
He added that it would be beneficial if the NFA and the clubs of Nigerian players maintain mutual understanding so that both parties could reach compromise on players’ release.
