Abuja to host West African magistrates’ conference

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Aliyu Modibbo Umar, has promised to support the Abuja chapter of the Magistrates Association of Nigeria to host their counterparts from all the 36 states of the federation and delegates from some West African countries.

The minister made this promise in his office when the association, led by its National President, Mrs. Latifat Folani, paid him a courtesy call at the weekend.

The Minister said that such international conference would further expose the Federal Capital Territory to genuine investors, whose attention would be focused on Abuja because of the magnitude and calibre of people expected at the occasion.

Dr. Umar disclosed that the FCT Administration was presently working on new laws to be enacted which would enable the city to live up to its expectation as one of the twenty greatest cities in the world by the year 2020.

The minister appealed to the magistrates of the FCT Judiciary not to entertain frivolous cases against the FCT Administration as that would retard progress in the development of the Territory.
“The courts should please support the government by discouraging frivolous cases which have served and will continue to serve as impediments to the discharge of any government agency’s functions”, he stressed.

Dr. Umar recalled the promise he made during the All Judges Conference at the Abuja Sheraton Hotel and Towers on Tuesday, November 6, 2007 that the FCT Administration would float a car loan scheme for any interested judicial officer in the Territory.
