A romantic marriage (2)

By Mrs Faith Oyedepo - Updated: Friday 29-05-2009

Dear Reader,
One thing that definitely pollutes the act of marriage is adultery. The Bible defines it as lying with another man’s wife (Leviticus 20:10). If either the man or the woman is married and has sexual intercourse with anyone other than his or her spouse, he has committed adultery and has opened up for God’s judgment. This week, I will be sharing with you on The Trap of Adultery.

When you are married, there is a hedge of protection round about you, which is broken when you commit adultery, and anything negative can happen as a result. Ecclesiastes 10:8 says: Whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him. The serpents of life are biting hard on many marriages and families today, because the hedge is broken by unfaithfulness. They lack honour and fulfillment because they have polluted the marriage bed. please be warned, God is not playing with words. If you commit adultery, the serpents will strike at your home.

Some men find it difficult to take away their eyes from women, whenever they see them. Take for instance, a beautiful woman walks by, a married man looks at her from the crown of her head to the sole of her feet; he admires her. She passes by, but her figure remains heavily imprinted upon his mind. God’s Word says even looking lustfully at a woman is the same as committing adultery with her. This is why God’s Word declares: ...Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart (Matthew 5:28).

This was where David missed it. David was a man after God’s own heart. He loved God and walked uprightly before the Lord. Nevertheless, a day came when he sent his lieutenants to war but tarried in Jerusalem. At evening time, King David strolled out upon the roof top. His heart must have been on the battlefield. He must have wondered how his men fared. As he pondered on these, his eyes caught sight of a beautiful woman bathing. One thing led to another, until he slept with the woman, killed her husband and brought destruction upon his family. James 1:14-15 summarizes the narrative in 2 Samuel 11 thus:...Every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. ...Every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

Then when lust has conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. The first place David committed adultery with Bathsheba was in his heart. Don’t let vain imaginations destroy you, cast them down (2 Corinthians 10:5). Bring every thought to the obedience of the Word.

As married people, there are certain stimuli we can do without. The world relies on pornography to stimulate their sexual appetite. We don’t need to do this, because the impressions they leave on the mind have devastating effects. Let only your spouse stimulate you. If your marriage is romantic, you will have no business with pornography.

As a married or single person, each time you see someone of the opposite sex and you lose balance, you cannot control yourself anymore, you sweat from head to toe or begin to stammer; you don’t need anyone to tell you that something is wrong somewhere. The earlier you deal with it, by pleading the blood of Jesus, casting out wrong thoughts and looking away, the better! You can deal with that temptation; it’s not above you (1 Corinthians 10:13).
