Yar’Adua Proposes Meeting On Gulf Of Guinea Guard Force

Clement Idoko, Abuja - 02.02.2008

President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has called for an urgent meeting of the leaders of member-states of the Gulf of Guinea Commission in order to approve modalities for faster action on the establishment of a Gulf of Guinea Guard Force.

This call was contained in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Communications, Mr. Olusegun Adeniyi, in Abuja on Friday, saying it would help tremendously to address emerging concerns about security in the oil-rich Gulf of Guinea.

The statement quoted Yar’Adua as speaking at a meeting with President Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea late on Thursday in Addis Ababa.

Yar’Adua said that he had discussed the establishment of the Guard Force during his recent visit to Washington and expected the United States Government to help the Gulf of Guinea Commission with logistics and training for the force.
