EFCC Probes Oyo LGs

By Our Reporter - 02.02.2008

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is already checking the books of the 33 local government areas in Oyo State.

A very impeccable source in one of the local government areas informed Saturday Tribune that the invasion of the EFCC into Oyo State was as a result of several petitions which some officials of the local government councils sent to the commission, that the state government was meddling unduly in the operation of the local government areas.

In fact, the source told Saturday Tribune that the EFCC had invited an official of the state government for interrogation on allegation of corruptly collecting money from the local government councils for “some people at the top.”

The official, who coordinates the activities of the local government area, was invited for interrogation by the EFCC early in the week and was released the following day.

Specifically, according to the source, the EFCC has been interrogating some of the principal officers of all the 33 local governments in the state in an attempt to reveal any untidy dealings in the administration of the local government authorities.

Accordingly, some top officials of the local governments in Oyo State have been invited by the EFCC for interrogation in batches.

They include the Chairman, Director of Personnel Management and Director of Works.

An official of the EFCC who spoke with Saturday Tribune on the story on Friday said that he would not want to make any comment, asking our reporter to contact the spokesperson of the commission, Osita Nwaja, for official comment on the development.
