NPA sacks 500 workers
01.06.2008
The Nigerian Ports
Authority (NPA) on
Friday laid off 500 workers.
The Authority's Assistant General Manager (Corporate Affairs) Mr Musa Iliya, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
He said the retrenchment was in line with the Monetisation policy of the Federal Government.
Iliya said the Monetisation policy had erased the jobs of some of the retrenched workers.
According to him, those affected included drivers, cleaners and securitymen.
''The retrenchment cuts across all the departments in the authority,'' he stated, adding ''it also affected the various ports in the country.''
The NPA spokesman also said that among those sacked were some senior staff, who had bad records.
