Bamaiyi: Court Set For Judgment

Akeem Nafiu, Lagos - 01.03.2008

AN Ikeja High Court presided over by Justice Kayode Oyewole has adjourned till March 3 and 10, 2008 for the adoption of written addresses of counsel in the ongoing trial of the former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi, over his alleged role in the attempted assassination of the Publisher of Guardian newspaper, Mr. Alex Ibru.

With the fixing of these dates, an end appears imminent to the almost a decade old trial of the Army Chief, as it is expected that after the adoption of counsel’s written addresses, the presiding judge will come up with the date to deliver judgement in the matter.

During Friday’s proceedings, the state through the Directorate of Public Prosecution, Lagos State, Mrs. Bola Okikiolu- Ighile, rounded off the cross-examination of the accused person, with General Bamaiyi insisting that he knew nothing about the allegations leveled against him.

The former Army chief is standing trial on a four-count charge of conspiracy to murder, attempted murder and causing of serious bodily harm to Mr. Alex Ibru and a one-time Commissioner for Sports in Delta State, Mr. Isaac Porbeni.
