Education: Lawmaker Calls For Improved Funding

01.03.2008

Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Education, Farouk Lawan, on Friday in Nsukka called on governments to show more commitment to the funding of the education sector.

Lawan told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the call became imperative due to the poor funding of the sector by the three tiers of government.

“Leaders must be ready to take a holistic look at the education sector so that it would be transformed.

“I am happy that in the 2008 budget, which was recently passed, the education sector was given almost double what was allocated to it in 2007,” he said.

He, however, called on parents to do more toward sponsoring their wards to schools.

“I would want to suggest that instead of sending their children to study abroad, the well-to-do should commit a fraction of that amount toward improving condition of learning in the country.

“This will not only benefit their children but will also extend to children of the poor,” he said.
